Port Arthur Historic Site
Port Arthur Photography, Tasmania, Australia
The Port Arthur Historic site is located at the southern end of the Tasman Peninsula, 95 km from Hobart, or around one and a half hours’ drive.
Port Arthur was a penal settlement established around 1830. Shipbuilding was introduced as a way of providing selected convicts with valuable skills they could use once freed.
Port Arthur did not end with the removal of convicts. Almost immediately, the site was renamed Carnarvon, and in 1880, the land was parcelled up and put to auction, with people taking up residence around the site.
