Mount Nelson Signal Station
Hobart, Tasmania
Nestled high in the hills overlooking Hobart, Mount Nelson offers one of Tasmania’s most captivating viewpoints. From this elevated perch, visitors are treated to panoramic vistas that stretch across Hobart, the winding Derwent River, and, on clear days, reach as far as Bruny Island and the vast expanse of Storm Bay. But this lookout isn’t just about the views—it’s also a gateway to Tasmania’s maritime past, anchored by the historic Mount Nelson Signal Station.
Constructed in 1811, this signal station was Tasmania’s first, playing a crucial role in the early communication network that connected Hobart to the outside world. Initially, flags were used to relay messages, but by 1831, a more sophisticated semaphore system was in place. This three-armed device could transmit 666 different codes, a number that grew exponentially when the system was upgraded in 1838 to a six-armed semaphore capable of handling over 900,000 signals. This ingenious method of communication was a lifeline for early shipping, making Mount Nelson a cornerstone of Tasmania’s maritime heritage.
Today, the Mount Nelson Signal Station invites visitors to step back in time and discover the stories of those who once kept watch over Hobart’s shores. The signalman’s house, dating back to 1897, has been beautifully preserved and now operates as the Signal Station Brasserie. Here, guests can enjoy a meal with a view—whether dining indoors or on the outdoor terrace, the 180-degree panorama is a feast for the eyes. The menu, crafted from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, complements the setting perfectly, offering a taste of Tasmania that’s as authentic as the history surrounding it.
For those in search of a destination that combines breathtaking natural beauty with a rich historical narrative, Mount Nelson is an unmissable stop in Hobart. Whether you’re a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates a good meal with a view, Mount Nelson delivers a uniquely Tasmanian experience that lingers long after you’ve left.
